A DIFFERENT KIND OF INHERITANCE

Nana loved telling stories about growing up on the
harsh Pecos plains. Those stories were part family
history, part imagination, and entirely Nana, but
beneath those stories was something much more
significant.
She wanted to leave a legacy—not one defined by
land, a family name, or what would someday appear
in a will. She wanted to leave an inheritance rooted in
generosity, stewardship, and service to others.
In the years following the loss of her husband, Vincent,
Nana entered a new season. The routines that had
shaped her life were gone, and she found herself
longing not merely for something to occupy her
time, but for something worthy of it. Then, in God's
providence, a new mission found her.
That mission came through my husband, Jason, Nana's
grandson, a fifth-generation Texan and Iraq combat
veteran.
Like many veterans, Jason returned home carrying
experiences that are difficult to explain to those who
have never served. The loss of mission, accountability,
structure, and team leaves a chasm that many people
never see or hear about.
But Nana saw. She knew her grandson's scars from

but she was at a loss for what that "more" could be.
