OPPORTUNITY TO SERVE

involvement of youth in volunteerism teaches them essential life
lessons and skills that not only instill empathy within them, but a
         passion for service early on.

The importance of volunteering is rooted in its lasting impacts
on everyone involved, including the volunteer. Terra Gunter, a
member of the VCL board, believes that volunteering teaches
lessons “you might (otherwise) miss out on,” and that people
will not understand everything going on in their community
unless they make themselves directly involved. Terra also
describes volunteerism as a way to “connect back with people.”

In achieving our mission at the Volunteer Center of Lubbock, we

Family Stories That Fall Into Place: Honoring Our Veterans

Fall is the perfect time to preserve your family's legacy, especially the stories of those who served.
Whether it's WWII or Vietnam, Korea or Desert Storm, their memories are pieces of living history.

Want to record a veteran's story? Try these tips:

             • Start with gratitude. A simple “thank you for • Don’t wait.
your service” sets the tone. • The best time to ask is now.

             • Ask open-ended questions. Try:

               • “What do you remember about basic training?” Want more family history help?

               • “How did you stay in touch with family?” Join the South Plains Genealogical Society
for our free Beginner Genealogy Class
               • “What was a moment you'll never forget?” at the Mahon Library, starting Sept 15!

             • Capture the context. Ask about branch, rank, We meet every third Monday at 7 PM

             • Keep it simple. Use a voice memo app or take your family tree—no experience needed.
